Backlinks – The back links are the links that point to a certain site; links from other web pages as well as links from the inner pages are counted here. They are also called inlinks.
Ban – A ban is the heaviest sanction that a site may receive from a search engine and it means that the site was completely removed from the search engine index and it won’t appear in any search results.
Bid management tool – A bid management tool is a software application that is used to manage different bids made on PPC (pay-per-click) programs (ex: Google AdWords or Yahoo Search Marketing).
Bidding – Bidding is the act of placing a bid in a PPC (pay-per-click) program (ex: Google AdWords or Yahoo Search Marketing). In most cases the top bid for a keyword receives the top spot in PPC results; the second bid receives the second spot in PPC results and so on. However, in the last period PPC programs (and especially Google Adwords) started to take in consideration and other factors (like the quality or the CTR (clickthrough rate) of the advertised web site).
Black hat SEO – Black hat SEO (which is the opposite of the White hat SEO) is a generic term for all SEO approaches that are not liked, accepted or recommended by search engine’s guidelines and policies. It generally exploits a bug in search engine algorithm and makes a site to rank high in a very short period of time. However most of the times the effect is a short one and in a matter of months, weeks or even days the site is heavy penalized or even completely banned from search engines. Most common black hat SEO tactics were over the time: spamming, cloaking, using doorway pages, using hidden text (ex: white on white background), cross-linking, using plagiarized content, using auto-generated content. It is also called unethical SEO.
Blacklist – A blacklist is a list of sites or servers that are known as using black hat SEO techniques or as spamming the other users. Search engines usually completely ban the site listed in the official blacklists.
Blog – The term blog describes a certain type of Web 2.0 site that looks more like an on-line diary, where the owners makes regular (most likely even daily) posts and where the visitors can comment on the owner’s posts. It is also called a web log.
Body copy – Body copy is a term that describes that part of a web page that is visible to search engines and text based browsers (usually only the text included in the web page).
Bot – A bot is a program that is used by a search engine to automatically explore the web and download, analyze and save the content of any page it finds. It is also called crawler, robot, or spider.
Bridge page – A bridge page is a page that has no real content and is only used to link / redirect to a web page. It was one of the most efficient black hat SEO tactics in the past, but it has no real effect nowadays. It is also called a doorway page.
Bulk submitting – Bulk submitting a site to different search engines and directories is a common practice when it comes about a SEO campaign with a very low budget; however they are not recommended by most search engines and directories and have only a minimal (if any) beneficial effect. It is also called automated submitting.
